Elderly Victims Lose $500,000 in Scams Targeting Seniors

Mission RCMP reported two seniors, aged 63 and 83, fell victim to scams between April 7-13. One senior lost $1,500 in a romance scam, while the other lost $500,000 in a cryptocurrency investment fraud. Authorities stress the need for awareness to protect the elderly from such scams.

Last week, Mission RCMP reported two cases of elderly individuals falling victim to romance and cryptocurrency scams. The incidents, involving a 63-year-old and an 83-year-old, occurred between April 7 and April 13.

In the romance scam, the younger victim sent $1,500 in Apple Gift cards to the fraudster before realising the deception. Conversely, the older victim believed he was making a legitimate investment through an online broker and consequently lost $500,000.

Mission RCMP emphasised the importance of discussing these types of scams with elderly family members to prevent further victimisation. Raising awareness among seniors is essential in protecting them from such fraudulent schemes.
