A Lincoln man fell victim to a cryptocurrency scam, losing $48,000. He was misled into believing his investment was worth $89,000, but discovered the scam when asked to pay an additional $6,000 to withdraw funds. Lancaster County has reported losses nearing $250,000 from scams in 2025, highlighting the issue’s prevalence.
A 40-year-old man from Lincoln has reportedly lost $48,000 to a cryptocurrency scam, which he was led to believe was a legitimate investment. The investments made between October 2024 and April 2 initially appeared to yield a return, with the scammer indicating a value of $89,000.
When the victim sought to withdraw his funds, he was informed that an additional fee of $6,000 was required to access the money, revealing the fraudulent nature of the operation. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office (LSO) Chief Deputy, Ben Houchin, indicated that recovering the funds is unlikely as they have been transferred internationally.
Moreover, it’s noted that Lancaster County has seen nearly $250,000 reported lost to scams this year alone, excluding incidents filed with the Lincoln Police Department. This statistic underscores the growing concern regarding cryptocurrency fraud in the region.
