Manitowoc’s Police Chief, Nick Reimer, is alerting residents to the increasing prevalence of Bitcoin scams within the city. During his appearance on WOMT’s Be My Guest program, he highlighted the emergence of Bitcoin ATMs in various retail locations and gas stations. Reimer disclosed that a recent case involved a victim losing $1,300 while trying to secure a health license, with some individuals reportedly losing as much as $18,000 to these scams.
To address this issue, Manitowoc Police are in the process of developing an ordinance that will permit the installation of warning signs on Bitcoin ATMs. Chief Reimer emphasised the importance of public awareness related to cryptocurrency transactions and advised caution when using these machines. He encouraged residents to verify the legitimacy of requests by consulting with their bank, relatives, or the police.
Reimer also noted that these Bitcoin ATMs are typically situated adjacent to traditional ATMs, making it essential for the public to be vigilant. The initiative aims to enhance public safety and inform residents about potential scams, providing them with resources to seek assistance if they believe they are being targeted.
