Lessons Learned from Losing Almost $200,000 in Investments

A 35-year-old director in Ho Chi Minh City lost nearly US$200,000 in stocks and crypto after borrowing heavily, despite previous success in real estate. This experience led to insights about the importance of mindset and reassessment in investing. He acknowledges the emotional toll of his decisions and now prioritises stability for his family over risky investing.

At 35, I am the director of a construction company in Ho Chi Minh City, with a family and significant assets. While my car valued at nearly US$38,500 aids my professional activities, it’s essential to note that my focus has always been on stability and providing for my family. For a decade, I’ve diligently built a rental real estate portfolio, earning around VND75 million monthly, which provides a reliable income stream, although not extraordinary wealth.

However, in 2024 and 2025, I made a critical decision to mortgage my assets and secure a loan of VND5 billion (US$192,000) for investments in stocks and cryptocurrencies. Entering this volatile market, I relied on my instincts and thorough research, confident in my understanding of market trends. Initially, my investments thrived and I felt successful, even doubling down on my investments.

Unfortunately, my confidence led to a dramatic downfall. My account balance plummeted to zero, while the substantial debt of VND5 billion remained. This experience highlighted the ephemeral nature of such investments. I have since acknowledged that successful investing extends beyond mere data and strategy. It encompasses mindset, self-awareness, and knowing when to withdraw from a positive trend.

Reflecting on my experience, I appreciate the strong foundation my real estate investments provided, which helped prevent a total financial crisis. However, the emotional burden of my poor investment decisions lingers, as I grapple with regret daily. Having crossed the age of 35, I feel societal expectations shifting towards sustainability for my family.

While I may choose to invest again in the future, I will not fall into the trap of believing in wealth via lucky trades. I have formally learned from my past and am committed to a more balanced and cautious financial approach moving forward.
