Mercuryo Launches Spend Card: Bridging Crypto and Everyday Transactions
Mercuryo’s Spend card, integrated with Ledger Live, enables users to spend cryptocurrency at over 150 million retailers globally using Mastercard. Initially supporting Bitcoin and Ethereum, future updates will add stablecoins. The initiative focuses on user control, security, and ease of integration with existing payment systems, promoting the adoption of digital currencies in everyday life.
Mercuryo has officially launched Spend, a new crypto debit card integrated with Ledger Live, allowing users to make fiat currency purchases directly using digital tokens. Supported by the Mastercard network, this card facilitates transactions for over 7 million Ledger users, marking a significant step in merging the Web3 ecosystem with real-world applications. This feature enhances how digital assets can be utilised in everyday spending.
The Spend card can be activated seamlessly and without fees via the Ledger Live app. This allows users to convert Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH) into fiat currency, enabling purchases at over 150 million merchants globally where Mastercard is accepted. Initially limited to BTC and ETH, future updates will include stablecoins and a broader selection of digital tokens. This card is also compatible with mobile payment systems like Apple Pay and Google Pay for both online and in-store transactions.
A key advantage of the Spend card is its direct funding from self-custody wallets, providing users complete control over their funds. Spend transactions are protected by Mastercard’s security protocols, including Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) measures. Furthermore, the card offers user-friendly features such as flexible spending limits, with a monthly cap of €40,000 catering to both casual and frequent users.
The introduction of the Spend card is a result of the strategic collaboration between Mercuryo, Ledger, and Mastercard, aiming to create a secure and integrated digital financial ecosystem. Leaders from all three organisations have expressed their enthusiasm about this partnership, highlighting the successful combination of advanced technology and user-centered design in the Spend card offering.
Founded in 2018, Mercuryo is a notable innovator in the Web3 space, providing payment solutions that make cryptocurrency access simpler for users. Partnerships with platforms like MetaMask and Trust Wallet underscore its influence in the decentralised finance (DeFi) sector. The Spend card expands Mercuryo’s offerings, reinforcing its role as a leader in the evolving digital currency landscape.
In 2024, Ledger will celebrate a decade of leadership in digital asset security, with a market presence that covers over 20% of global crypto assets. It has sold over 7 million devices worldwide and serves more than 100 financial institutions, bolstered by the expertise of Ledger Donjon, a top-tier security team. The recent rise in crypto-related fraud highlights the necessity of robust solutions like those provided by Ledger.
With the Spend card launch, Mercuryo and Ledger are addressing user needs for practical cryptocurrency usage in everyday transactions, aiming to simplify spending to the ease of traditional credit cards. Currently available to residents in the European Economic Area (EEA), plans for global expansion are underway, making crypto spending secure and straightforward for more users. This initiative exemplifies how technology is bridging the gap between digital assets and their practical application in daily purchases.
