Berkshire Hathaway has $347 billion in cash, which is enough to buy up to 18% of Bitcoin’s supply. Despite the upcoming leadership change with Greg Abel taking over for Warren Buffett, there is no current indication of a shift in the company’s stance on Bitcoin. However, Berkshire does have indirect exposure to cryptocurrencies through investments in companies like Nu Holdings and Jefferies.
Berkshire Hathaway currently sits on a staggering $347 billion in cash and US Treasury bills, which accounts for about 32% of its $1.1 trillion market cap. This raises an intriguing question: could the company buy Bitcoin? The answer is yes, and actually, they could purchase around 3.52 million BTC at a price of roughly $95,000 each. Such a purchase would give them about 18% of the total Bitcoin supply, which is impressive and could certainly shift dynamics in the crypto market.
To give a clearer picture, if Berkshire were to use only its US Treasury assets, estimated at $295.98 billion, it could acquire approximately 3.12 million BTC, translating to about 15.85% of all circulating bitcoins. This would still position them as a major player, far exceeding Strategy Inc. (previously MicroStrategy), currently the top corporate Bitcoin holder with its 553,555 BTC worth $52.2 billion as of early May.
While intriguing, there’s speculation surrounding the potential change in leadership at Berkshire. Warren Buffett’s planned retirement by the end of 2025, with Greg Abel stepping in, leaves many wondering if Abel will adopt a more positive stance on Bitcoin. To date, he hasn’t shown any intent to diverge from Buffett’s historically skeptical views on cryptocurrencies.
Buffett has long viewed Bitcoin as speculative, calling it “rat poison squared.
