Vitalik Buterin Announces Ethereum to Scale Layer 1 by 10X in a Year

Vitalik Buterin announces Ethereum’s layer 1 will scale by 10X in the next year, focusing on maintaining decentralization and user privacy. The cautious plan includes updates to stateless nodes and the EVM. Despite recent market challenges, increased purchases from companies like SharpLink Gaming indicate confidence in Ethereum’s future growth and recovery in ETH prices.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, informed attendees at ETHGlobal Prague that the platform’s layer 1 is set to scale significantly—up to 10 times—over the next year. Buterin emphasised the dual goals of expanding network capacity while ensuring the cornerstone principles of decentralisation are preserved.

He cautioned that the scaling process could take up to a year and a half, stressing the importance of a thoughtfully paced approach. Rushing decisions could potentially undermine Ethereum’s critical strengths, such as its ability to fend off censorship and uphold user privacy.

The scaling plan focuses on enhancing stateless nodes and effectuating updates to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This strategy stands in contrast to suggestions from Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist, who advocates for a more aggressive scale-up—aiming for 100 times improvement within five years.

Buterin reiterates his desire for a cautious approach, aiming for gradual growth to ensure the network remains secure and widely accessible. Despite a downturn in ETH prices and reduced on-chain activity in early 2025, interest in scaling Ethereum appears to be rising.

Companies like SharpLink Gaming are reportedly purchasing billions worth of Ethereum via BTC Spot ETFs, suggesting returning confidence in the market. As the impending major upgrade approaches, forecasts speculate that ETH might rebound to $3,000, aiming to recover from its previous losses.

Buterin’s measured strategy for scaling presents a pathway for Ethereum to evolve further, carefully balancing speed, stability, and preservation of decentralisation.
