Ember Sword Game Shuts Down Amid Widespread Crypto Game Closures
Ember Sword, once popular with $203 million in NFT sales, has suspended operations due to lack of funding. Other crypto games, like Nyan Heroes and Deadrop, have also shut down in recent months, reflecting a troubling trend in the industry.
In a striking shift within the gaming landscape, Ethereum-based MMORPG Ember Sword, once a beacon of the metaverse boom with $203 million in NFT land sales, has shut down operations. Developer Bright Star Studios announced the closure, citing a significant shortfall in funding, which made continued development impossible. The game’s official statement reflects frustration and regret: “We explored every possible way forward. But in today’s market—where even some of the most promising projects are shutting down—we couldn’t find a path to keep building.”
Ember Sword’s rise in 2021 coincided with the prominence of the metaverse, especially after Facebook’s rebranding as Meta. During its heyday, the studio secured substantial funding, including a $2 million round featuring investment from popular figures like Dr. Disrespect and Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin. Furthermore, it garnered backing from industry veterans, such as Rob Pardo, former chief creative officer at Blizzard, and esports legend Dennis “Thresh” Fong.
Despite its initial success and a peak during the NFT land grab phase, where participating players spent approximately $203 million, the game faced extensive criticism. After entering closed beta in July 2024, many players expressed disappointment with the gameplay. The situation worsened when it had to transfer to the Ethereum layer-2 network Mantle, following an earlier switch from Polygon to Immutable X.
The shutdown is a severe blow to its community, with servers now offline and limited access to Discord. Additionally, the value of the EMBER token has plummeted dramatically, down over 99% from its all-time high, now valued at less than $100,000. The official site expressed disappointment, stating: “This isn’t the ending any of us wanted.”
Unfortunately, Ember Sword isn’t the only victim in the collapsing crypto gaming sector. Recently, the Solana-based game Nyan Heroes, which featured a cat-themed shooter, also announced its closure, primarily for similar financial struggles. The studio, 9 Lives Interactive, had touted over a million players but couldn’t secure further investment despite running a successful play test via Epic Games Store.
Moreover, Blast Royale, a mobile game, further announced that its development would halt, though it will release its code to the open-source community for future use. In another development on the same day, Ronin’s Tatsumeeko RPG also discontinued, redirecting its resources to a new project called Project: Wander.
Other gaming titles facing shut down recently include Gala Games’ The Walking Dead: Empires, set to close by the end of July, and formerly popular games like Deadrop and The Mystery Society. This trend signals a deeper issue within the crypto gaming ecosystem as many titles struggle to stay afloat amidst funding crises and shifting player expectations.
